Time to start thinking about your Christmas tree and whether or not you will be going with an artificial Christmas tree or a real Christmas tree. Obviously both have their positives and negatives and from an antique perspective a real one is more fitting. However, real Christmas trees are not always the most convenient.

A real Christmas Tree will obviously not last as long as an artificial tree. This requires a little bit more planning when you start decorating for the holidays. So don't expect to put your tree up before Thanksgiving and have a beautiful green tree on Christmas day. It's possible that the green needles will have turned brown and most of your greenery will be in the vacuum cleaner.

Artificial trees are much easier to decorate and will last for years. Artificial Christmas trees are designed and built to accommodate a lot of ornaments and heavy ones as well. Where a real Christmas tree will have imperfections and not all the branches will be able to support heavy antique ornaments.

So, if you like a challenge and the smell of fresh pine, then go with a real Christmas tree. Just know that unlike an artificial Christmas tree there will be imperfections, dead spots, and a 'good side'. Also, don't forget to water that real tree so that it will last as long as possible.

Looking to create a unique holiday experience for your family and friends? Why not create a truly modern free Christmas?

The idea is to outfit your Christmas decorations with only antiques. Meaning only antique Christmas Lights to be hung on the tree and only antique Christmas cards can be sent out to family and friends. Also, don't forget that only antique ornaments can be used on the Christmas tree.

Taking this a step further to make it a modern free holiday, only exchange antique Christmas gifts. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to search out expensive authentic antiques. There are plenty of antique Christmas gifts that can be made right at home, thus saving you a lot of money.

So, start planning your modern free Christmas now and watch your savings grow. Everyone will remember the antique Christmas at your house.

The crunch is on and generally speaking if you are still trying to do your Christmas shopping online, it's too late, at least if you want the packages to arrive before Thursday. I've spoken with UPS and FedEx freight to confirm that unless you pay for next day air and order early this morning, chances are you will not get the package before Christmas morning. This becomes an even bigger concern if you ordered something larger, which would need to be shipped via freight line. As an example I ordered a set of 4x4 tires for my brother for Christmas and UPS and FedEx freight will not pick up or deliver from the 24th to the 26th.

Don't let this bad news get you down, after all it is the thought that counts. So if you don't have time to get out and brave the elements, or you just have to get something online, go ahead and do it anyway. Simply giving a card on Christmas with a note that the present is in the mail can mean just as much. I've found this especially true in past years because items could only be purchased online, because all the brick 'n mortar stores were sold out.

Merry Christmas and remember to start shopping online earlier next year, just to make sure you get your presents out on time.

Traditions have to start somewhere, so why not start your own Christmas tradition with your family and friends THIS holiday. Like any good tradition worth repeating, careful planning is required, so you can never start too early preparing for what will be a life long event. I've composed a list below of Christmas traditions you can start this holiday and each tradition has an Antique flavor added to it.

Antique Christmas Tradition Ideas

Exchange antique Christmas Ornaments

Go Ice Skating on a real lake or pond, not indoors

Have a hot chocolate party outside in the first snow of the year

Get a bail of hay or straw and prepare it for Santa's Reindeer

Dedicate a smaller tree in the house to only antique Christmas decorations

Although a myth, start hiding a Christmas Pickle

Make your own antique Christmas gifts instead of buying them at the store

These are just a few Christmas tradition ideas to get you started. Please share what unique traditions your family does in honor of an Antique Christmas.
