The Christmas Box

January 7th, 2010

I just finished reading the book The Christmas Box. I know it's after the Holidays, but I started reading it when things were hectic and just forgot about it. That is, until today at lunch.

This book truly is worth a read to any parent or soon to be parent. It asks the question, what was the first Christmas gift? It's love, time spent with loved ones, and knowing when you are selling diamonds to earn stones.

The book itself is relatively short and can be read in one setting for most regular readers. I on the other hand stretched it out over about 3-4 settings, mainly reading the book while my daughter took the time to eat her vegetables. So don't be intimidated and remember this inexpensive, $4.99, hard cover book as a Christmas gift for next year. Or it makes the perfect gift no matter the season.

Richard Paul Evans originally wrote The Christmas Box as an expression of love for his two daughters, never intending for it to be published. Many Christmas seasons (and a rich publishing contract) later, this touching tale relates the meaning of Christmas in a profound but simple way...

A Christmas Story on Blu-Ray

December 2nd, 2009

What better way to celebrate the Holiday with family and friends and in the company of your very own Leg Lamp, than with the A Christmas Story movie. The movie is quickly finding it's way onto our TV at home, much like the Frosty The Snow Man series in claymation that has my 2 year old captivated.

It's funny, entertaining, and Christmas themed, and well worth the purchase especially now available on Blu-Ray DVD.

Great movie....love it, brings back such memories from the good old days. Everyone should watch it. Never gets old and it is entertaining enough to watch it over and over again

I greatly enjoyed the fast service and great pricing. I am very happy to own this timeless classic.

Decorating Christmas cookies with out watching this movie just cannot happen! So funny and I love it!!!

We can't make it through the holidays without watching A Christmas Story once or twice...it's a modern classic. Gene Shepherd was a sublimely funny story teller and his talent lives on in the movie version of his wonderful musings.

This is a fantastic Christmas DVD! I have loved this film since it first was produced on a DVD. But I have enjoyed it even more since it has been reproduced on a blu-ray mode. I would reco9mmend this dvd to anyone who loves the old fashion memories of Christmas and children growing up!

A Christmas Story Antique Lamp

December 2nd, 2009

Ok, sure it probably doesn't fit into the definition of antique, ok I know it doesn't. But I just can't help myself enjoy the absolute tackiness of a Leg Lamp and it fits the holidays just so well.

Amazon.com is currently running a deal on these lamps, which means for just $12.23 you can have a 8" tall Leg Lamp like the one seen in the movie A Christmas Story.

We had a $10 limit on our office Christmas gift exchange. This was the perfect thing. The person who received it LOVES it.

It's okay for a night light; however, I thought the leg lit up, which it doesn't.

They enjoyed the laughs when opening this gift. It is cute and a fun reminder of the favorite CHRISTmas movie

It is soooo cute. I love A Christmas Story and I bought this for my friend who does too. I cant afford the real version so this night light is perfect. Its also a large size for a night light. I would recommend this for anyone who likes the movie as much as we do, but cant afford the real leg lamp. Thanks again. Brea Herring

Antique Christmas Lights

November 9th, 2009

Personally when I think of an antique Christmas lights I always think of a candle. Generally speaking candles create the best lighting to highlight antique Christmas decorations, but this isn't always the safest. That's why from time to time it helps to rely on newer technology to give the illusion of an antique Christmas. One example is the use of technology would be lights that mimic the looks of candles, which can then be placed safely in window sills and even hung on your antique Christmas tree.

However, don't forget that there were antique Christmas lights that looked somewhat like our tree lights today. The early 1900's were a time where there were 2 main types of technologies found in the lights. There were those Christmas lights made with carbon filament and those built using tungsten filament. Most antique Christmas lights came with warnings never to mix the two.

If you actually find actual antique Christmas lights I would strongly suggest not actually using them. They can pose a hazard because of old electrical wiring, which can cause differences in brightness and cause burn outs, shorts, etc. If you end up using antique Christmas lights for decoration, please do not connect them to a power source, leave them up for display during the day only.

Antique Christmas Tree Glass Ornaments

October 22nd, 2009

Antique Glass Ornaments are probably one of the most popular collectible items for the holidays.  Everyone seems to be unique and they provide exceptional life to any antique Christmas decoration.  But beware, they might also be the most delicate of all antique ornaments.

When buying antique glass ornaments online make sure the seller is familiar with shipping delicate items.  It can be incredibly frustrating to finally find the perfect antique glass ornament, but when you open the UPS box you find glass pieces.  This tip falls back on making sure you only buy antique items from reputable sources, like trusted sellers on eBay.

If you are an avid collector of antique glass ornaments you may also be interested in learning the history of the items you are purchasing.  Some sellers will go so far as to collect the story behind the ornaments, which adds to their collective nature, and adds value to the buyer.  Just knowing the year they were made and where they were made can make all the difference in a purchase.  Good luck finding the perfect glass ornaments for this Christmas!

Artificial Christmas Tree Vs Real Christmas Tree

October 12th, 2009

Time to start thinking about your Christmas tree and whether or not you will be going with an artificial Christmas tree or a real Christmas tree.  Obviously both have their positives and negatives and from an antique perspective a real one is more fitting.  However, real Christmas trees are not always the most convenient.

A real Christmas Tree will obviously not last as long as an artificial tree.  This requires a little bit more planning when you start decorating for the holidays.  So don't expect to put your tree up before Thanksgiving and have a beautiful green tree on Christmas day.  It's possible that the green needles will have turned brown and most of your greenery will be in the vacuum cleaner.

Artificial trees are much easier to decorate and will last for years.  Artificial Christmas trees are designed and built to accommodate a lot of ornaments and heavy ones as well.  Where a real Christmas tree will have imperfections and not all the branches will be able to support heavy antique ornaments.

So, if you like a challenge and the smell of fresh pine, then go with a real Christmas tree.  Just know that unlike an artificial Christmas tree there will be imperfections, dead spots, and a 'good side'.  Also, don't forget to water that real tree so that it will last as long as possible.
